Corrosion on Steel Pipelines: A 2019 v 2009 Comparison

Otakar Člupek, Martin Smrček

Summary: In 2009, the company examined the condition of its steel gas pipelines on uncovered sites (predominantly in local networks) in terms of the age of the pipes, the quality of their coating, and any occurrence and extent of corrosion. It examined 36 sites. In 2019, the company repeated the examination of the condition of its steel gas pipelines applying a similar procedure. At 43 sites intended for refurbishment, it identified the technical condition of uncovered pipes and gauged the aggressiveness of the surrounding soil. A comparison of the findings from 2009 and 2019 indicates persisting problems caused by the lack of technological discipline during construction and certain individual problems with low-quality factory coating. No significant correlation between soil aggressiveness caused by its chemical composition (pH, conductivity, content of aggressive substances) and corrosion was identified. On the whole, the degree of corrosion on steel pipes of comparable ages was significantly lower after the ten years. For GasNet, s.r.o., the results of the two assessments were the basis for developing a model of the life cycle of the steel pipes in its local networks operated in the Czech Republic.

Experience with the Operation of Active Corrosion Protection of Complex Structures

Jan Thomayer

Summary: The purpose of the contribution is to provide information about the experience with the project preparations, rollout, and operation of cathodic protection of complex structures at NET4GAS to meet the criteria set out in ČSN EN 14505 Cathodic Protection of Complex Structures. NET4GAS has nine cathodic protection stations that protect the premises of delivery and compressor stations, line section closing valves, and junction points. The contribution compares the various approaches to the philosophy active protection of premises, the types of the groundbeds and grounding systems used, etc. It also offers experience with putting the various active protection systems in operation and a comparison of the output parameters recorded in actual operation.

Systematic Terminology for Corrosion Control Systems at PPD, a.s.; Its Implementation into This Gas Pipeline Operator’s Software Packages

Daniel Hlinomaz

Summary: In his contribution the author discusses the modification of the terminology for corrosion control systems (CCS) so that this abbreviation fully describes all the equipment connected to the interconnection devices (ID); at the same time, the terms must be machine-readable and must be understandable for the personnel. This issue has been addressed through ‘systematic terminology’ inspired by the systematic chemical nomenclature. The number and the pressure levels of gas pipelines, and the number of casings, insulating joints, galvanic anodes, etc. connected to an interconnection device are therefore encoded in the abbreviation ID. The author also describes the implementation of this system in the GIS (Graphic Information System) and the retrieval of this data into GASacor2, a software package for collecting, processing, and archiving inspection measurements of CCS parameters under the TPG 905 01 regulation. Nor does he omit the basic parameters of the processing of systemised terms in GASacor2. The contribution also offers examples of the application of this systematic terminology.
