The ERO’s Measures to Address the Energy Crisis in the Gas Industry in 2022

Jan Šefránek, Alexandr Černý

Summary: The contribution describes the steps taken by the ERO last year to help address the energy crisis in the gas industry. The developments required a fast response and primarily adopt measures to maximize gas volumes in storage facilities and to minimize negative impacts on market participants caused by skyrocketing wholesale gas prices. In this respect, the ERO amended the relevant Price Decisions and public notices.

Key words: Regulation in the gas industry, gas storage facilities, energy crisis, the Energy Regulatory Office (the ERO)

The European Gas Fever – The Role of LNG terminals

Tomáš Novotný

Summary: The Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed the European perception of gas. A premonition of restrictions prompted the move to urgently replace the historical pipeline gas supply from Russia with infrastructure being rolled out for LNG imports. The first new terminals were put into operation as early as September 2022, and the end of 2022 saw another increase in the import capacities. This helps to gain more time for building larger-capacity onshore terminals to plans that have been dusted off again. LNG streams from all over the world help to meet the unexpected demand, resulting in the transfer of European worries to, primarily, Asia Pacific.

Changes in the Composition of the Gas Distributed in the Czech Republic

Libor Čapla, Václav Koza

Summary: The composition of natural gas in the Czech distribution system, or the Czech part of the former Czechoslovak system, has not changed too much over time to date. Almost all of the gas was that supplied from the former Soviet Union and, following its disintegration, from Russia mainly to western European countries and met their requirements. The situation completely changed in 2022 when gas supply from Russia to the EU was reduced and large quantities were replaced with LNG. In this context, the contribution discusses the changes in the composition of the natural gas distributed in the Czech Republic.

Key words: Natural gas composition, LNG, gas distribution, interchangeability
