Nord Stream 2 – A Reliable Energy Supply for Europe

Károly Banai

Summary: The 1230 km long Nord Stream 2 pipeline will transport natural gas through the Baltic Sea to meet demand from consumers in the European Union. It will help tackle the gas shortfall caused by declining domestic production, and contribute to a thriving, competitive internal energy market. Nord Stream 2 is a major commercial project that touches on a range of complex issues, such as energy security, environmental protection, international relations and market dynamics.

Key words: Nord Stream 2, gas supply, energy security

LNG a Stabilising Element in the European Gas Industry

Michal Kocůrek

Summary: Decisions on the future of natural gas in the European energy system will be taken in the coming months. The Madrid Forum meeting in April 2020 will be the first messenger of the new conditions that will shape the European gas industry. The contours of the expected gas packages are to be communicated more clearly there. In particular the production, trading and injection of renewable gases are expected to constitute the core of the new legislation. If, then, issues related to renewable gas should dominate in 2020, in 2019 main attention focused on LNG and its almost doubled supply to the EU countries. However, the LNG supply issue should not be missing in the European gas discourse after 2020 either.
Despite the unquestionably strengthening future role of renewable gases in the European gas industry, LNG can play the key role for maintaining or even enhancing the attraction of natural gas in the European energy mix. The benefits of LNG for the EU countries’ energy security can be viewed from three different perspectives: the strategic, economic, and political marketing aspects. Nevertheless, from all the three perspectives LNG appears to be an important tool for meeting the Energy Union’s objectives in terms of ensuring diversified gas supply that facilitates a better integration of natural gas market and also the lowest possible gas prices at each of the European markets.

Role of Hydrogen Technology in Energy Transition

Jan Kulas, Lukáš Polák

Summary: Societies are currently experiencing the reality of the climate change increasingly intensively. The need to revise the current status in energy production was endorsed in the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015 and is bound to have an impact on most industrial segments and also on people’s individual requirements. Meeting the COP21 targets constitutes one of the most difficult energy transitions in mankind’s history. The decarbonisation of the various sectors has to be addressed in a comprehensive manner, through improving energy efficiency and promoting and interconnecting renewable sources. The common denominator of each of the steps conducive to decarbonisation is the universal carrier of energy—hydrogen. It can be used in all emission-intensive sectors: energy, transport, and industry. Integrating the energy production, consumption and storage sectors (sector coupling) will make it possible to achieve the objective—keeping the global temperature within tenable limits compared with the pre-industrial level.

Key words: decarbonisation, hydrogen, power-to-gas, energy infrastructure

Microbial Stimulation of Natural Gas Production

Petr Buryan, Kateřina Demnerová, František Kaštánek

Summary: The contribution summarises the laboratory findings concerning the potential microbial stimulation of natural gas and crude oil formation under the real-life conditions in the Czech Republic, specifically at Moravské naftové doly a.s. (MND) based in Hodonín. Another result, which is important from the perspective of field operation, is the finding that it is possible to use molasses as an external substrate for microorganisms’ metabolic processes that produce gas and other substances supporting gas and crude extraction.

Key words: microbial stimulation, natural gas, production
